Spring Boat Prep Checklist: Getting Your Tinny Water-Ready for the 2026 Season
The first launch of spring should be the best launch of the year, not the one where you discover what winter did to your boat.
There is a particular kind of weekend in late winter when the air still has a chill but the days are stretching out, and every boatie starts thinking the same thing: the season is coming. Spring is when the estuary fish switch back on, when the mornings get light enough for a dawn launch, and when the ramp car parks start filling again. It is also when the boats that sat ignored under a tarp since May come out to meet the water — and the ones that get a proper pre-season check are the ones that spend the summer on the water, not on the trailer.
A spring prep session is not a full rebuild. It is a two-hour morning of checks, greasing, charging and tightening that catches the small problems before they become the reason your long weekend dies at the ramp. This checklist covers the order that makes sense — engine first, then trailer, then safety and electronics — so nothing gets missed.

- Engine: oil, fuel lines, water pump impeller, spark plugs, and a freshwater flush
- Trailer: bearings, brakes, tyres, lights and the winch strap
- Safety: life jackets (check the date on the buoyancy), flares, EPIRB battery, fire extinguisher

Engine: where winter does its worst
The outboard is the heart of the boat, and winter is hard on it — condensation in the fuel system, corroding connections, and seals that dry out in the sun. Start the prep here.
Oil and fuel
Check the oil level and condition, and change it if it has sat for more than a season. Old two-stroke mix that has been in the tank since May should be disposed of properly and replaced fresh. Check every fuel line for cracks, soft spots and loose clamps — a perished fuel line is one of the most common causes of a no-start at the ramp. Inspect the primer bulb and replace it if it feels stiff or cracked.
The impeller
The water pump impeller is the single most important maintenance item on an outboard, and it is the one most often skipped. If the impeller has not been changed in two years, replace it before the first launch. A failed impeller overheats the engine, and an overheated outboard on the water is an expensive day out. The impeller kit is cheap relative to the damage a seized engine does.
Spark plugs and the flush
Pull the spark plugs, check the gaps and replace them if they are fouled or corroded. Run a freshwater flush through the cooling system if you have a hose attachment — this clears any salt or sediment that settled over the winter. Check the anode (the sacrificial metal fitting on the lower unit) and replace it if it is more than half eaten away; a worn anode means the corrosion is going somewhere else — your engine.
Trailer: the part everyone forgets
Most boats spend more time on their trailer than on the water, but the trailer gets a fraction of the attention. A trailer failure at 100 km/h is not an inconvenience, it is a crash.
Bearings and brakes
Jack the trailer up and spin each wheel, listening for grinding or roughness. If the bearings have not been repacked in the last 12 months, do it now — and if the hubs get hot on the drive to the ramp after you have repacked them, stop and recheck. For braked trailers, check the brake pads and the cable, and test that the override coupling works. Saltwater trailers should have their brakes flushed and serviced annually.
Tyres and lights
Check the tyre pressures — including the spare — and look for cracking in the sidewalls, especially if the trailer has sat in the sun all winter. Tyres older than five years should be replaced regardless of tread, because UV damage ages them invisibly. Test every light on the trailer with the vehicle plugged in: indicators, brake lights, tail lights and the number plate light. Corroded light fittings are the most common trailer electrical failure, and they are a fine waiting to happen on the road.
Winch and coupling
Check the winch strap for fraying and the winch mechanism for smooth operation. Lubricate the coupling and make sure the safety chain and its shackle are in good condition. A winch strap that snaps while you are loading the boat is a quick way to lose a boat down a ramp.
Safety gear: the non-negotiable hour
Safety gear does not fail loudly — it fails when you need it most. Spring is the time to check everything systematically.
- Life jackets: Check every jacket for damage and, critically, check the buoyancy date if they are the inflatable type. An inflatable PFD with an expired cylinder is just a jacket. Service kits are cheap.
- Flares and EPIRB: Check the flare expiry dates — they are regulated and out-of-date flares are a fine in most states. Test the EPIRB according to the manufacturer's instructions (the self-test function, not a full activation) and check the battery expiry.
- Fire extinguisher: Check the pressure gauge and the service date, and make sure it is mounted where you can reach it from the helm.
- Kill switch lanyard: Test it, and make a habit of attaching it every time you are underway.
Electronics and 12V: power is everything
A sounder that does not fire up on the water, a VHF that will not transmit, a bilge pump that clicks but does not run — all of these are 12V system failures, and they are almost all preventable.
The battery
Charge the battery fully and load-test it before the first trip. A battery that has sat all winter often tests fine at rest but collapses under load — a load tester catches this. Check the terminals for corrosion and clean them with a wire brush and terminal protector. If the battery is more than four years old and showing any weakness, replace it now, not after it leaves you floating.
Connections and wiring
Go through every connection: battery terminals, the sounder power leads, the VHF, the nav lights and the bilge pump. Corrosion in a crimp connection is the most common electrical gremlin on a tinny. Replace any cracked or chafed wiring, and re-terminate any connection that looks green. Use marine-grade heat shrink connectors where you can — they keep the salt out.
The sounder check
Power the sounder up on the trailer and run it through its screens. Check the transducer for damage and make sure the transducer cable is secured and not chafing against anything. A transducer that was bumped in the shed over winter can read garbage on the water, and it is a frustrating day trying to find fish with a unit that will not hold bottom.
The shakedown launch
The best pre-season habit is to treat the first launch of spring as a shakedown, not a fishing trip. Pick a calm, familiar spot, launch, and spend 30 minutes checking the engine at idle and at planing speed, the steering, the trim, the bilge and the electronics. Listen for anything unusual, feel for vibration, and confirm the engine's cooling tell-tale is pissing properly. Fix any issue while you are still near the ramp, where help is a phone call away — not out at the reef.
