Australian Wooden Boat Festival 2027: Hobart

Australian Wooden Boat Festival 2027: Hobart

Every second February, the Hobart waterfront fills with timber boats. The Australian Wooden Boat Festival runs 5 to 8 February 2027, and it is less a trade show than a gathering: classic and traditional vessels alongside boatbuilding demonstrations and maritime trade displays.

What it is like

Four days, mostly outdoors, spread along the docks. You will see restored working boats, small craft built in backyards, and professional boatbuilders demonstrating techniques in public. The trade side is there too, but the reason people return is the boats themselves.

For anyone who has only ever seen production fibreglass, it is a useful reminder that hull materials and construction methods vary enormously — which also matters when you are working out how to attach anything to a deck.

If you are taking a boat down

Tasmania rewards a slower trip. The Tasmania travel guide covers the state's cruising and camping regions, and February is the most reliable month for weather on the east coast.

Connectivity on the water is a different problem to connectivity on land. A dish mounted on a cabin roof or a rail needs a clear view and a mount that suits the surface: stainless and aluminium do not hold magnets, and smooth non-porous surfaces can take suction. For boats specifically, mounting to a rail or a flat cabin top usually beats anything that relies on steel.

What to look at, even if you are not in the market

  • How boats are finished — varnish, paint and fittings tell you a lot about maintenance expectations.
  • Deck hardware and rails — the same rails you would clamp a mount to.
  • Electrical installations — 12V systems on boats are frequently more carefully done than on vehicles, and worth studying.

Practical notes

Hobart in February is pleasant but changeable; the waterfront is exposed. Book accommodation early — the festival is a genuine draw for interstate visitors.

No sealed roads, no servo, and a barge that will not wait. Here is how to do Mulgumpin properly in spring, from permits to the best camp on the western beach.

Hard sand under the tyres, humpbacks resting in the bay beyond the headland — a spring run to K'gari is the trip that earns its place on the calendar.

Frosty mornings, granite boulders and a fireside cellar door at every turn — Queensland's highest wine region is at its best when the rest of the state is in shorts.

Red dirt, artesian baths and the open road—the Adventure Way is the ultimate winter 4WD trek through Outback Queensland to the edge of the desert.

A big number on the box does not mean a big night of power. Here is how usable capacity, inverter loss and surge ratings decide what your caravan can actually run.

A fridge that copes fine in winter can fail badly at 40 degrees. Most of the fixes cost nothing — and one of them is a five-minute check behind the vent.

No bars at the free camp doesn't have to be part of the deal. Here's how to mount and power a Starlink Mini on your van so it works every time you stop.

A seized caravan bearing ends a trip faster than anything else on the rig. It is also one of the few failures you can spot a week early with the back of your hand.
