A Family Caravan Adventure to Cradle Mountain

A Family Caravan Adventure to Cradle Mountain, Tasmania

As our caravan rolled into the picturesque Cradle Mountain region of Tasmania, our family couldn't help but be in awe of the wild and rugged landscape before us. Nestled within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Cradle Mountain offered us the perfect family getaway with mesmerising rainforests, ancient glacial lakes, and an abundance of adorable wombats.

Setting up our van at a caravan park near the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park allowed us easy access to various activities and attractions. Though our caravan was cozy, we were eager to explore the great outdoors, especially since Cradle Mountain is only a 2-hour drive from Launceston and a 4-hour drive from Hobart.

Our first outing led us to Cradle Mountain National Park, where we purchased a Tasmanian Parks Pass for $40 per car. This pass allowed us to enter the park and opened up a world of exploration, including the famous Overland Track. We weren’t quite at this level of adventure just yet with the kids in tow. This 5-6 day hike stretches 80km from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair and would be an unforgettable journey through Tasmania's alpine heart.

While the Overland Track might be more suited for experienced hikers, plenty of family-friendly walking trails within the park exist. We opted for the easy and enchanting King Billy Track, which starts at Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge and takes about 45 minutes to complete]. The kids absolutely loved the epic forest setting, and we enjoyed the peaceful and serene atmosphere of the ancient rainforest.

Another highlight of our trip was visiting Dove Lake, where we marvelled at the stunning mountainous backdrop and the iconic Boat Shed. We also ventured to Waldheim Chalet, a historically significant site now serving as a museum, offering a glimpse into the region's pioneering past.

Despite being known for its abundant rainfall and humidity, especially in winter, we were fortunate to experience pleasant weather during our stay. This allowed us to fully appreciate the unique beauty of Cradle Mountain, which is truly a destination for all seasons.

Our family's caravan adventure to the Cradle Mountain region of Tasmania was nothing short of magical. With its diverse walking trails, fascinating history, and breathtaking landscapes, it's no wonder this remarkable destination left an indelible mark on our hearts.
